A sure sign of hope.
The Janet Dozie Foundation is an Empowerment Program that provides interest-free micro-finance loans that enable widows to start small businesses. The Foundation also provides scholarships (from primary to tertiary school levels), health services and health education for widows and their children.
The JDF Empowerment Program was designed to put a smile on the faces of indigent widows at no cost to them. The success of the project so far will induce the extension of the project to all states of the federation. It is hoped that JDF will help to eradicate poverty and hunger, to reduce maternal and child mortality, to increase income generation and to raise the economic status of indigent widows in Nigeria.
The Janet Dozie Foundation has offices in a few states in Nigeria, and is managed by an Executive Secretary, who is supported by programme officers and other staff. They identify and sensitise the target groups (indigent widows) through focal persons (leaders of women organisations, local communities, etc) and institutions. The focal persons coordinate the activities of the widows, ensure that the interest-free loans reach the targeted groups, and also ensure the repayment of the loans.
